1. Mission
The museum was
founded on November 20, 1969, as the first natural history
museum in Korea and has since been committed to providing
educational programs on nature for students and the general
public. The museum is devoted to not only doing pure research in natural history but also collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and researching various specimens of animals, plants, insects, minerals, rocks, and fossils.

2. Facilities
The museum has
Research Laboratory, Lecture Room, Storage Room, and
Exhibition Hall (Permanent Exhibition Hall, Special Exhibition
Hall, and Diorama Hall). The Permanent Exhibition Hall is
divided into six sections: Vertebrates I and II,
Invertebrates, Plants, Insects, and Earth Science. Each
section exhibits specimens, pictures, photographs, and descriptions. The Diorama Hall is divided
into four sections that exhibit the actual ecosystem.

The State-of-the-Art Diorama Hall
The museum takes pride in the
state-of-the-art Diorama Hall that exhibits the ecosystems of
the forest, sea areas, and damp areas of the Korean midland.
In addition, the Ecology Corner lets the visitors observe the process of breeding and growth of live animals. From the first floor to the fifth floor, the walls of the stairway exhibit the super graphic of the evolutionary process and the history of the earth.
4. Permanent
Exhibition / Special Exhibition
The Permanent Exhibition shows various
specimens of animals, plants, insects, minerals, rocks, and fossils throughout the year. On the other hand, the Special Exhibition is an annual event. A total of twelve Special Exhibitions had been held, and each exhibition intensively
touched on the specific areas in the field of natural history.
5.
Diverse Educational Programs
The museum offers diverse educational
activities for students and the general public: Natural
History Classes, Special Lectures, Scientific Experiments, and
Explorations. In addition, the museum publishes Natural
History News four times a year. These educational programs and
resources aim at enhancing the people¡¯s understanding of
nature. Moreover, Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education has
selected the museum as an Official Educational Institute for
Field Experience, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has
registered the museum as a 1st Level Comprehensive Museum, and the government
has selected the museum as an Official Educational Institute for Professional Curator.
6.
Active Volunteer Programs
The current Ewha Womans University
students, alumnae, retired professors, and housewives have
been volunteering for the museum after receiving the required
training workshop for each position. The volunteers serve as docents who guide tours of school children and other groups through the museum, assist in developing educational programs, help publishing newsletters, and more.
