Database Design and Implementation: This course provides an introduction to theories and concepts in modeling, designing, and implementing a database application. The conceptual database design of the course focuses on Entity-Relationship Modeling, and the introduction to database models emphasizes relational database and Structured Query Language (SQL). MySQL will be employed to implement database modeling and design.
Information Retrieval and Web Search: This course is an introductory course to the conceptual understandings of information retrieval in both contexts of traditional information systems and Web search. Topics include Boolean, term vocabulary, index construction, vector space model, retrieval system evaluation, and Web search basics.
Digital Libraries: This course is an introductory course to the conceptual understandings of digital libraries with hands-on implementation experiences. Topics include definition, systems, contents, knowledge representation, retrieval, evaluation, social/economic aspects, and the future of DL.
